Flyers vs. Devils odds, props, predictions: Bet New Jersey on ‘home ice’ in first NHL Stadium Series game at MetLife

The NHL’s 2024 Stadium Series begins Saturday night with the Flyers and Devils facing off at MetLife Stadium. Puck drop is set for 8 p.m. ET on ABC.

Philadelphia and New Jersey have split two games this season, and they were both compelling finishes in overtime. The outdoor setting gives this matchup some added juice before a national TV audience.

The Flyers and Devils are jockeying for position in the NHL’s Metropolitan Division, but both are chasing the Rangers for the top spot. The Rangers and Islanders meet on Sunday in the second game of the Stadium Series at MetLife.

Let’s examine Flyers vs. Devils odds, props, predictions ahead of Saturday’s opener.

Most recently, Philadelphia registered a 3-2 OT win at New Jersey on Dec. 19. The Devils notched a 4-3 OT road win over the Flyers on Nov. 30.

Flyers betting news: Philadelphia historically bad on power play this season

The NHL trade deadline is fast approaching on March 8, and Flyers center Scott Laughton’s name has been included in trade rumors. Laughton might be mindful of those rumors and critics after scoring in back-to-back games over the past week against the Coyotes and Kraken.

Philadelphia (29-19-6) is led by right wing Travis Konecny, who tallied 25 goals and 49 points through 54 games. The Flyers average 2.9 goals per game, which ranks them in the bottom half of the league.

Philadelphia is bad on the power play this season, converting just 12.6% of the time with a man advantage. Only Chicago converts at a lower percentage.

The Flyers have been streaky of late. Heading into Thursday night’s game at Toronto, Philadelphia had reeled off four straight wins:

  • Flyers 5, Coyotes 3
  • Flyers 3, Kraken 2
  • Flyers 4, Jets 1
  • Flyers 2, Panthers 1

Prior to that, the Flyers dropped five straight games. Head coach John Torterella finally named a captain earlier this week. Torts put the “C” on center Sean Couturier, who became the 20th captain in franchise history.

Devils betting news: New Jersey missing its top netminder

New Jersey’s No. 1 goaltender, Vitek Vanecek, is recovering from a lower-body injury that will keep him out of Saturday’s contest. Vanacek has put together a record of 17-9-3 this season. Akira Schmid, recently called up from the AHL, or Nico Daws will get the start in net.

The Devils (27-24-1) have a balanced offensive attack that includes nine players with 10+ goals on the season. Right wing Tyler Toffoli leads the team with 22 goals

New Jersey looks to make a deeper playoff run after getting knocked out in the second round by Carolina last season. The bad news is the Devils are 0-2 vs. the Hurricanes this season with both losses coming in the last month.

New Jersey first needs to pick up the pace in the Metropolitan Division. The Rangers were 13 points ahead of the Devils heading into tonight’s games.

The Devils are among the NHL’s top-10 teams on the power play, converting 23.7% of the time with an extra skater. Toffoli scored a power-play goal in New Jersey’ 4-3 win over Philadelphia earlier this season. Brothers Luke Hughes (goal) and Jack Hughes (assist) connected for the game winner 28 second in overtime.

Flyers vs. Devils prediction

Don’t be surprised if this is another OT thriller on Saturday night. The Flyers and Devils are evenly matched. Man-advantage situations could prove to be critical, and New Jersey’s power play is much more dangerous.

Pick: Devils
