New York Yankees second baseman Gleyber Torres exited the game in the seventh inning Friday night after being hit by a pitch on his throwing hand during the 7-1 win over the Houston Astros.
Despite staying in the game immediately after being hit by the pitch, Torres eventually pulled himself from the game during a mound visit in the bottom half of the frame that followed. He was replaced by Jahmai Jones at second base.

After the game, manager Aaron Boone told the media that X-Rays came back negative on Torres’ hand, specifically his thumb. Torres told reporters that he’s hopeful to play Saturday night.
Torres hopes to play Saturday night
“I feel a little bit better right now,” Torres said via The Post. “I hope [Saturday] I can play.”
Torres stayed in the game after being attended to by the training staff following the hit-by-pitch in the top of the seventh inning. He initially felt as though he could continue playing but once he needed to grip the baseball in the field, the concerns arose.
“I felt good after the hit-by-pitch, but I [wasn’t] able to throw the ball really well, so I don’t want to put [first baseman Anthony Rizzo] in that situation with a man on first. Maybe a double-play situation, I don’t want to mess around with that. Just tried to make the best decision for the team,” Torres said.
The injury doesn’t appear to be a long-term issue for Torres. The imaging came back negative and the fact that he was still willing to stay in the game as long as he did is encouraging. It may simply come down to a pain tolerance situation.
With D.J. LeMahieu starting the season on the injured list, the Yankees acquired super utility man Jon Berti in a trade with the Miami Marlins. He could get the start at second base Saturday night if Torres can’t go.
The Yankees also could move the scorching-hot Oswaldo Cabrera to second from third base, and put Berti on the hot corner.
Juan Soto tweaks ankle
Another injury scare took place Friday night when star outfielder Juan Soto was being looked at by trainers in between innings. Soto twisted his ankle running the bases on an Aaron Judge pop-out.
Soto was able to finish the game and was adamant he would be in the lineup Saturday night against the Astros. The 25-year-old superstar is 4-for-7 with a double, two RBI and three walks to begin the season.
Soto has been as advertised to begin the season, and he’s even made a major impact on the defensive side of the ball.
D.J. LeMahieu update
Currently on the 10-day injured list with a foot injury, LeMahieu’s status remains unclear. Aaron Boone told the media before Friday night’s game that they are still awaiting the results from the imaging. He did mention that LeMahieu threw and hit off a tee Thursday.
In his place, Oswaldo Cabrera has been on fire to begin the season. Through the first two games, Cabrera is 6-for-9 with a home run, a double and six RBI.
