Yankees get discouraging news in D.J. LeMahieu injury update

New York Yankees third baseman D.J. LeMahieu will be out longer than expected after a second MRI test revealed he has a non-displaced bone fracture in his foot.

Yankees manager Aaron Boone provided the update ahead of Saturday night’s game against the Houston Astros. Boone said LeMahieu will be re-imaged in two weeks after the discovery of the bone fracture.

LeMahieu started the season on the 10-day injured list after fouling a ball off his foot during Spring Training.

Boone also said LeMahieu will continue to do as many activities as can be tolerated, including some throwing and swings in the cage.

LeMahieu to miss more time

With LeMahieu on the shelf for at least another two weeks, the Yankees will continue to rely on the scorching-hot Oswaldo Cabrera to man the hot corner. Cabrera has been one of the Yankees’ best hitters to begin the season.

The utility infielder has started both games at third base while going 6-for-9 at the plate, including a home run, a double and four RBI.

The Yankees also are expected to give Jon Berti some playing time. He was expected to get the start at third base Saturday night, but that was before Cabrera led the 7-1 win on Friday night with a four-hit night.

Clayton Beeter optioned

In other news, right-handed relief pitcher Clayton Beeter was optioned to Triple-A on Saturday after making a historic MLB debut Friday night.

Taking his place will be left-hander Tanner Tully, who is expected to provide some length in the bullpen. In 19 starts with the Triple-A Railriders, Tully posted a 5.64 ERA with 77 strikeouts in 91 innings pitched during the 2023 season.
