Yokohama FM vs. Liverpool lineups, team news, score prediction: Ekitike set for debut

Liverpool conclude their Asian tour in Japan on Wednesday when they take on J. League giants Yokohama F. Marinos.

Arne Slot’s Premier League champions lost 4-2 to AC Milan in Hong Kong last weekend, following back-to-back wins over Preston North End and Stoke City back in England.

Speculation over a big-money move for Newcastle United striker Alexander Isak continues to dominate the Reds’ pre-season discourse, while Luis Diaz is on the verge of joining Bayern Munich.

Seven-time Japanese champions Yokohama, who won the J. League as recently as 2022, are enduring a dreadful season and are languishing in 18th position – the final relegation spot to the J2 League – with 24 matches of the 38-game campaign gone.

Yokohama F. Marinos vs. Liverpool predicted lineups, team news

Marinos right-back Ren Kato suffered an injury during last weekend’s much-needed 3-0 win over Nagoya Grampus. If he’s not fit to return, one-time Arsenal youngster Ryo Miyaichi could start on the right-hand side of the defence.

Striker Kaina Tanimura opened the scoring in that game but also sustained a knock. He’s expected to be okay to face Liverpool, but this could be a chance for head coach Hideo Oshima to give new signing Dean David some action.

Yokohama F. Marinos predicted lineup (4-2-3-1, right to left): Ik-Kyu (GK) — Miyaichi, Quinones, Deng, Suzuki — Yamane, Aziangbe — Matheus, Inoue, Elber— David

Injured: Kato, Tanimura (doubt)

Alisson will miss the match after flying home to tend to a personal matter. The Brazil goalkeeper joins Joe Gomez in flying home early from the tour, along with Luis Diaz, who is in Munich to complete his move to Bayern.

Giorgi Mamardashvili is likely to start in Alisson’s absence, while Hugo Ekitike should get a chance to stake his claim after the £79million signing from Eintracht Frankfurt had a watching brief for the Milan game.

Alexis Mac Allister is back in training following an injury absence that began before the end of last season, but this game is set to come too soon for the Argentina midfielder.

“It’s hard to explain [the injury] because it’s not just one spot that you say, ‘Okay, we have to focus on this.’ It’s like two or three different things that I’ve been struggling [with] for a couple of months,” Mac Allister told Liverpool’s official website. “At the end, we found the solution; we have been working a lot in the gym, on my structure. It’s hard to explain it but as I said, now I’m feeling good and for me that’s the most important thing.”

Liverpool predicted lineup (4-3-3, right to left): Mamardashvili (GK) — Frimpong, Stephenson, Van Dijk, Kerkez — Szoboszlai, Gravenberch, Wirtz — Salah, Ekitike, Ngumoha

Injured: Gomez, Mac Allister
Unavailable: Alisson, Diaz

Yokohama F. Marinos vs. Liverpool

Milan punctured a little of the understandable excitement around Liverpool’s Premier League title defence, but Slot’s men should have far too much for a Marinos side who will be keen to get back to the serious business of securing their J1 status.

Predicted score: Yokohama F. Marinos 1-4 Liverpool
