The New York Yankees’ infield needs a change. Their infield defense has been poor. Luckily for the Yankees, they already have a very capable second baseman on the roster.
However, that second baseman, Jazz Chisholm Jr., is having to play third base because DJ LeMahieu is uncomfortable at third base, according to The Athletic’s Chris Kirschner. LeMahieu has not been good at the plate either, making it hard for the Yankees to justify catering to his wants.
The Yankees need to find a third baseman so that they can move Chisholm back to second base. Adding a second baseman to simply replace LeMahieu is not going to help much, as Chisholm’s defense in the hot corner is poor. According to USA Today’s Bob Nightengale, the Yankees “would love” to acquire Eugenio Suárez from the Arizona Diamondbacks.
Suárez is playing on a $15 million club option this year. He signed a seven-year, $66 million deal in 2018, but will enter free agency for the first time after this season. He could be an everyday third baseman for the Yankees.
Suárez has a .255/.322/.569 slash line this season. He has also hit 28 home runs this year. The veteran slugger would bring drastic improvement to the Yankees’ infield, while also providing much more offensively than LeMahieu has.

The Diamondbacks are in danger of falling out of contention. Suárez has hit over 300 career home runs, and the team could look to maximize on his great season by trading him for a solid return. The Yankees could officially end LeMahieu’s time as a starter by bringing Suárez to The Bronx.
