Yankees urged to swing blockbuster trade for $154 million elite hitter

The New York Yankees have been aggressive this offseason after losing Juan Soto to the New York Mets. They might not be done making moves and could target one of the best hitters in baseball.

Just Baseball’s Harrison Bruns named the Yankees as a potential suitor to trade for San Diego Padres star Luis Arraez. Arraez is no stranger to being traded. The Padres were his third team in the last three seasons.

“I particularly like the fit of Arraez in the Bronx because of what he can provide hitting in front of Judge,” wrote Bruns. “Last season, the Yankees had Soto to hit in front of Judge. That is going to be impossible to replace. However, a player who is always a threat to win the batting title is a good place to start.”

Arraez is one of the best hitters in baseball. He does not bring power like other elite hitters, but he has a better batting average than anyone in the league. He has won three consecutive batting titles. In 2023 he led all of baseball in batting average. Defensively, he does not fill the Yankees’ needs, but his ability at the plate is good enough to bear with bad defense.

“If they are able to add someone like Ha-Seong Kim, they could move Jazz Chisholm to third and have Arraez play first,” wrote Bruns. “If they add a first baseman like Alonso, they can have Chisholm play third and stomach Arraez’s bad defense at second.”

Arraez is in the final year of his contract. He is projected to earn a nine-year, $154 million deal in free agency next offseason.
