The New York Yankees will be without one of Major League Baseball’s most versatile players for the remainder of the season.
Following a devastating fractured ankle earlier this month, super-utility player Oswaldo Cabrera will focus on working his way back for the 2026 season.
For the Yankees, that means they need to find a replacement for versatile slugger and beloved locker room personality.
Though he’s not an ideal option, the Yankees were urged to make a trade for Colorado Rockies veteran Kyle Farmer by Drew VonScio of Newsweek.
“Farmer isn’t the most glamorous of choices for the Yankees. However, he checks a few boxes: He’s a right-handed bat, a third baseman, and would require very little for the organization to acquire him,” VonScio wrote.
VonScio proposed the Yankees could part ways with one of their right-handed pitching prospects like Cam Schlittler (No. 10 prospect) or Clayton Beeter (No. 20 prospect) and cash considerations.
Considering the Rockies are 9-45 entering Tuesday’s slate of games, it can be expected that they will be sellers at the MLB trade deadline in July.
The 34-year-old can play all over the infield and has some experience playing left field as well. He enters Tuesday with a .246 average, two home runs and 16 RBI. His 80 OPS+ leaves much to be desired, but the Yankees have made it clear they don’t want to overextend the luxury tax.
The Yankees wouldn’t need him to be a superstar, but they certainly could use an extra bump at third base from the right side of the plate.
