Yankees trade idea lands Cardinals top 5 prospect to fix infield woes

The New York Yankees could be looking for an infielder near the trade deadline. They may be able to find a big league-ready starter in the minor leagues.

The St. Louis Cardinals look like they can make a postseason push, so they may not be inclined to trade Nolan Arenado. However, they may be willing to trade away their No. 5 prospect, Thomas Saggese. FanSided’s Zach Pressnell called him a fit for the Yankees.

“Trading Saggese would be a huge move for the Cardinals to make,” wrote Pressnell. “He looks like a star and there’s a chance he develops into one. But the Cardinals could look to trade him to a team like the Los Angeles Dodgers or New York Yankees to bring in other players at a position of need. It’s the kind of deal that could work for two contending teams.”

Saggese played in 14 games in the big leagues this year. He hit .341 with an .876 OPS and a home run. However, he does not have a clear role on the team right now or in the future unless there are injuries.

“The future of second base in St. Louis is the team’s top prospect JJ Wetherholt. Wetherholt is smashing Double-A pitching this season and could eventually make his way to Triple-A over the next few weeks,” wrote Pressnell. “This puts prospect Thomas Saggese in a tough spot for the Cardinals. Saggese was excellent when he got the opportunity to play in the big leagues, but it doesn’t seem like he’ll have that chance again unless there are injuries or Arenado is traded.”

The Yankees are in need of someone to either play second base or third base on a consistent basis. Saggese has the ability to play both middle infield spots and in the hot corner. He would be a cheaper addition than a superstar third baseman as well. He could replace DJ LeMahieu at second base if the Yankees want Jazz Chisholm Jr. in the hot corner.
