Yankees trade idea lands $79 million Diamondbacks slugger in blockbuster

The New York Yankees are a team that has a few holes to fill at the trade deadline. Their starting rotation has been hit hard by injuries, and they don’t have a clear solution at third base.

They also recently lost first place in the American League East to the surging Toronto Blue Jays. They sit two games back of Toronto.

Third base is a clear area of need. They recently release D.J. LeMahieu, but don’t seem to feel comfortable with Jazz Chisholm Jr. as their starting third baseman.

Mike Axisa of CBS Sports proposed the idea of New York trading for Arizona Diamondbacks slugger Eugenio Suarez.

“Suárez would be the ideal addition for New York. He’s a rental and a legitimate middle-of-the-order power guy, something they could use to lengthen the lineup behind Aaron Judge & Co,” Axisa wrote.

“The D-backs enter play Wednesday 5 ½ games behind the third wild-card spot with four teams ahead of them, so they’re in the race but also facing an uphill climb.”

Suarez is hitting .249/.317/.556 with 29 home runs, 75 RBI, a 2.6 WAR and an .873 OPS. He earned his second All-Star nod this year.

The Yankees don’t have a lot of top prospects to spare in trade talks, but Suarez would be a good fit for their lineup. Yankee Stadium is very hitter-friendly, so that should help him continue his surge.

This could help the Yankees gain some much-needed ground in the AL East and potentially even take first place back from the Blue Jays. Suarez also brings power from the right side of the plate, which should help New York out as they try to turn things around.

It will certainly be interesting to see who the Yankees target in the coming weeks.
