Oswald Peraza has had a rough go of things in the New York Yankees organization.
Once considered a slam-dunk Top 100 prospect in all of Major League Baseball, Peraza debuted at the end of the 2022 season and was largely successful. But ever since Anthony Volpe beat him out for the starting shortstop job in 2023 spring training, he’s been unable to carve out a full-time role at the big-league level.
This season, Peraza is the platoon third baseman in New York, and D.J. LeMahieu’s impending return from the injured list could leave him without a job. It’s fairly clear that the Yankees would entertain trades for the 24-year-old, but would anyone bite?
That’s a question that will be answered in due time, but one baseball writer believes the San Francisco Giants could be a trade fit.
On Saturday, Empire Sports Media’s Ryan Garcia proposed that the Yankees could ship Peraza to San Francisco in exchange for Mason Black, a 25-year-old right-handed starting pitcher who is currently pitching for the Giants’ Triple-A affiliate.
“Mason Black isn’t a top-100 prospect or a pitcher who immediately slots into the middle of your rotation, but he brings upside and replenishes some lost depth after the trades for Juan Soto, Alex Verdugo, and Trent Grisham,” Garcia wrote.

“The Yankees add much-needed pitching and another option to make spot starts if need be, and it clears up a roster spot in case they choose to make an upgrade on the bench. Both teams match up well in a perspective trade, and I believe they’d both be happy with the players they get.”
Black appeared in nine games for the Giants last season, pitching to a 6.36 ERA in 36 1/3 innings. In Triple-A so far this season, he has allowed four earned runs in 12 innings with a whopping 19 strikeouts.
The question at this point is whether the Yankees have driven Peraza’s value so far into the ground that a team like San Francisco believes they have better options internally. San Francisco has a former top prospect of their own, Marco Luciano, whose career trajectory closely mirrors Peraza.
