It’s not often an MLB team announces trade details in September.
But that’s what the New York Yankees and Tampa Bay Rays did on Wednesday afternoon.
The Yankees announced the completion of their trade deadline deal with the Rays that brought Jose Caballero to the Bronx.
New York had pulled off that deal just before the July 31 deadline.
The speedy Caballero came to the Yankees that day in exchange for outfielder Everson Pereira, who is now in the majors with the Rays.
But the trade was also set to send a player to be named later to Tampa Bay. That player was announced Wednesday.
The Yankees are also sending outfielder Marshall Toole to the Rays to complete the deal.
Toole played in 96 games at Single-A Tampa this season and put up an .885 OPS with 44 steals.
He’s 22 years old, a bit old for that level, but he proved he has some serious baseball talent.
Toole’s mostly a speedster, with 14 doubles, 13 triples and five homers in those 96 Single-A games. He was 44-for-50 stealing bases.
This was his second year in pro baseball. The Yankees chose him in the 15th round in 2024 out of Wofford.
Now, he’ll try to climb the ladder in the Rays’ system instead of with the Yankees’ organization.
