Yankees top prospect gets surprise debut prediction from MLB analyst

The New York Yankees are focused on the here and now, but there’s a promising talent emerging in the minor leagues.

The organization’s top prospect, George Lombard Jr., has been making serious noise to begin the 2025 season.

After an impressive showing in spring training, the 20-year-old started the campaign at the High-A level where he hit .329 with one home run, 13 RBI, eight doubles and a .983 OPS.

Lombard was promoted to Double-A Somerset after 24 games and while it has been a struggle through his first 10 games at the new level (.560 OPS), CBS Sports’ R.J. Anderson believes the young talent will be on the MLB roster sooner rather than later.

Lombard, New York’s first-round pick in 2023, won’t celebrate his 20th birthday until June. That hasn’t prevented him from batting .299/.469/.421 with 10 extra-base hits, 14 stolen bases, and three more walks than strikeouts against High- and Double-A competition. Depending on how he fares the rest of the season, there’s a real chance he’ll be knocking on the big-league door before the end of his age-21 campaign.

The Yankees have typically taken it slow with their top prospects in recent seasons. It wasn’t until 2025 that Jasson Dominguez became a full-time player at the MLB level.

Lombard certainly has the tools to break out early in his career, and the Yankees have long-term question marks at both shortstop and third base.

His production at Double-A will be a major factor in deciding his next move, but Yankees fans should be familiarizing themselves with Lombard’s name.
