The New York Yankees haven’t caught a ton of injury breaks this season.
The latest issue came Saturday, when one of their stars heard a “pop” in his left shoulder.
That was Anthony Volpe, who dove at a ground ball that made it past him for a single.
Volpe stayed in the game.
“It happened quick and it was scary, but after that, I felt OK and I felt like I had my strength,” Volpe told MLB.com. “I’ve never really had anything else pop or dislocate or anything like that, so I have nothing to compare it to.”
But on Sunday, the Yankees kept Volpe out of their lineup for the series finale against the Rays.
New York is already without Jazz Chisholm after three high-grade tears in his right oblique sent him to the Injured List and forced the Bronx Bombers to seek an alternative at second base.
An extended Volpe absence could prove costly.

Yankees manager Aaron Boone had felt fine about Volpe’s status on Saturday night.
“Once he got up and was moving around, he felt fine,” Boone told reporters Saturday night. “We wanted to make sure strength-wise he was in a good position, and we felt like he was.”
In Sunday’s lineup, Pablo Reyes slots in at second base and Oswald Peraza is the shortstop.
New York might need to seek out a trade partner if these injuries keep their double-play combination out for too long.
