Despite breaking a six-game losing streak with a win against the New York Mets, the New York Yankees need to make some changes with the trade deadline approaching.
One position that the Yankees are targeting before the trade deadline is a third baseman. With Oswaldo Cabrera’s injury, New York has been playing Jazz Chisholm Jr. primarily at third base, despite his preference to play second. The Yankees have been getting inconsistent play from other options and could use a boost at the hot corner.
The New York Post’s Jon Heyman reported that the Yankees are interested in a reunion with Isiah Kiner-Falefa, as shared by MLB.com.
“Although Jazz Chisholm Jr. began this season as the Yankees’ second baseman, he has been manning third base since returning from a right oblique strain on June 3. However, Chisholm has said the keystone position is a more natural spot for him, and considering that second baseman DJ LeMahieu has contributed a .664 OPS, the Yankees could look into adding a third baseman before the Trade Deadline and shifting Chisholm back to second.”
“The Pirates’ Ke’Bryan Hayes is “on their radar.” The Yanks are also interested in Pirates infielder and former Yankee Isiah Kiner-Falefa.”

Kiner-Falefa spent two seasons in New York before signing a two-year, $15 million deal, according to Spotrac, with the Toronto Blue Jays after the 2023 season. The former Gold Glove Award winner played well in Toronto before getting traded to the Pittsburgh Pirates last season.
The 30-year-old utility player is slashing .272/.316/.655 this season with one home run and 22 RBIs across 76 games. A reunion with Kiner-Falefa would give the Yankees a consistent option at third base and let them move Chisholm back over to second.
