The New York Yankees could be in search of a third baseman at the trade deadline. They could make a blockbuster deal with the Boston Red Sox to land one.
Before the season, Rafael Devers was adamant about keeping his third base spot. However, he has since settled into the designated hitter role, and Alex Bregman is now playing third base. However, Devers is 0-for-19 with 15 strikeouts to start the season. Manager Alex Cora says the position change has nothing to do with it, but Deevers was reportedly open to a trade when the change was initially discussed.
AthlonSports’ Jon Conahan proposed the Yankees trade for Devers. DJ LeMahieu and Oswaldo Cabrera were slated to play third base this season. However, LeMahieu suffered an injury in spring training, and Cabrera is more suited for a bench or utility role.
“There aren’t many MLB teams that could realistically offer them the type of package they’re looking for, but teams are interested in adding a third baseman,” wrote Conahan. “Among the teams that could use Devers are the New York Yankees, which would be a trade that would shock the baseball world.”
Devers signed a $313 million deal with the Red Sox in 2023. The three-time All-Star committed to the Red Sox, but his position change and early slump could open the door for a trade.
