Yankees, Rays trade idea could bring $24 million ‘ideal fit’ to NY

The New York Yankees have made many impact moves after losing Juan Soto. They could make one more trade to round out their infield before Opening Day.

The Yankees let Gleyber Torres walk in free agency. His departure leaves them looking for an impact player at second base. DJ LeMahieu is an option, but perhaps a risk. CBS Sports’ Mike Axisa noted that Tampa Bay Rays second baseman Brandon Lowe could be a fit in the Bronx next season.

“Lowe’s lefty power and second-base glove would be an ideal fit for the Yankees,” wrote Axisa. “Maybe even the Dodgers too. It’s worth noting Díaz and Lowe both have club options for the 2026 season. They aren’t necessarily one-year rentals.”

Lowe hit 21 home runs last season. He was an All-Star in 2019 and is playing on a six-year, $24 million extension. He has a $11.5 million club option for 2026. The Rays have a track record of paying players before they have to pay them.

“The Rays trade their highest-paid players every offseason (Tyler Glasnow and Manuel Margot last year, Ji-Man Choi and Brooks Raley the year before, etc.) and they’ve already moved lefty Jeffrey Springs and the $21 million they owed him from 2025-26,” wrote Axisa. “Lowe ($10.5 million) and Díaz ($10 million) are scheduled to be the two highest-paid Rays in 2025.”

The Yankees could add Lowe, keeping Jazz Chisholm Jr. at third base. He would be a cheaper option than bringing in Alex Bregman or Nolan Arenado to solve their infield puzzle.
