There are many questions surrounding New York Yankees shortstop Anthony Volpe this offseason. After three seasons as the Yankees’ shortstop, many believe it’s time for the team to re-evaluate Volpe’s future.
Volpe just endured possibly the worst season of his Major League career in 2025, leading baseball in errors with 19, and slashing a porous .212/.272/.391 with 19 home runs and 72 RBIs at the plate. His struggles went even further in the postseason, as he was 1-15 with 11 strikeouts in the ALDS against the Toronto Blue Jays.
Simply put, Volpe has severely underperformed expectations placed on him as a rookie in 2023, and with the Yankees looking to capitalize on their current title window now, much speculation about Volpe’s future with the Yankees has circulated.
Volpe remains a part of the Yankees’ future plans
Bryan Hoch of MLB.com responded to a fan on X about the Yankees’ future plans at the shortstop position. In short, Hoch believes the 2026 role comes down to the same players it did in 2025.
“It’d be Volpe or Caballero at the moment. Maybe someday in the future it’s George Lombard, Jr., but that’s not 2026,” Hoch said.
Lombard Jr. is one of the Yankees’ top prospects, and could become Volpe’s replacement soon if things don’t turn around. It’s hard to justify continuing to trot Volpe out there every single day next season, and the team will certainly evaluate its options after another disappointing playoff exit this past season.
