Yankees predicted to keep former Mets No. 2 prospect on Opening Day roster

Dominic Smith knows what it’s like to play on one side of the Subway Series with the New York Mets.

He may soon experience the other side of things in Yankee Stadium.

Smith is currently projected to make the New York Yankees’ Opening Day roster, according to MLB.com’s Bryan Hoch.

That’s not something that seemed likely at the beginning of Spring Training, when Smith was a non-roster invitee to Yankees camp.

Smith, who ranked as high as No. 2 in the Mets system as a prospect according to Baseball America, is 8-for-24 this spring with two home runs.

He has bounced around a bit since making his MLB debut with the Mets in 2017. He played 447 games with the Mets, then moved to the Nationals for the 2023 season. In 2024, Smith split time between the Red Sox and Reds.

The 29-year old is a lefty-swinging, lefty-throwing first baseman and DH option for the Yankees.

He’s a career .246 hitter in the big leagues.

Smith is likely in competition with Ben Rice for starting designated hitter honors while Giancarlo Stanton recovers from injury. The pair could also spell Paul Goldschmidt at first base.

Earlier this spring, Boone spoke about Smith to reporters: “The guy has been a really good hitter throughout his career, a pro hitter.”

And that pro hitter might just be heading for the Yankees’ Opening Day roster.
