Yankees played their ugliest home game in 113 years vs. Red Sox in error, walk-filled series opener

The last time the New York Yankees played a home game this ugly, the Titanic had struck an iceberg less than a month prior.

From May 11, 1912 to Aug. 21, 2025, much has changed. But apparently the Yankees are still capable of a historic stinker.

This one was even worse because it came against their biggest rival, the Boston Red Sox, in an absolute mess of a Thursday night defeat.

The criteria that hadn’t been met since 1912 were these, via Baseball Reference researcher Katie Sharp:

  • 4+ errors
  • 9+ pitching walks
  • Both done in a 9-inning game

The Red Sox won, 6-3, so with less of those miscues, the Yankees would’ve had a great chance to win.

Luis Gil, Jazz Chisholm, Ben Rice and Paul Goldschmidt each made an error.

Gil and Goldschmidt both forgot how to use their glove for a second, while Chisholm and Rice both displayed the ability to throw a baseball way over its intended target.

On the mound, Gil walked five guys. Camilo Doval walked one while getting just one out. Luke Weaver walked two while getting just two outs. And Tim Hill added the final walk.

The Yankees’ pitchers only struck out five batters, so especially in the modern game, that’s a horrific walk-to-strikeout ratio.

The Red Sox did outhit the Yankees, 10-8, but they were brutal with runners in scoring position early in the game before scoring five of their six runs in the final five innings (including two in the ninth on a Roman Anthony home run).

The Yankees got both a triple and a home run from Rice, who did his best to make up for his error.

Chisholm and Goldschmidt each had two hits, too, and Jazz stole a bag.

But in the end, the Yankees did way too much wrong to earn a win against their rival. It had been a long, long time since it got this bad in one night.
