Yankees’ Paul Goldschmidt hints at his first-ever position change

Paul Goldschmidt is a first baseman, and a pretty darn good one.

The Yankees star has won four Gold Gloves at first base. He has played all 1,902 of his MLB games in the field at first base.

But there Goldy was, a few hours before the Yankees played on Wednesday at the Stadium, taking ground balls at second base.

This probably means nothing.

But given the Yankees’ odd infield conundrums, it could be more than nothing.

Anthony Volpe has shortstop held down, but second base and third base are more confusing.

With Jazz Chisholm back from injury, he can conceptually always be at one of those spots.

Then there’s DJ LeMahieu, who has played second base and first base in his career.

Beyond that, it’s journeymen or non-prospects that get occasional starts.

And then there’s this: When Giancarlo Stanton returns from injury to DH, the only spot Ben Rice can play in the field is first base, where Goldschmidt is the everyday starter.

This is very possibly a legitimate attempt by the Yankees to just have one more maneuver in their back pocket.

The 37-year old doesn’t seem the most likely candidate to take up a new position at this point in his career.

But maybe, just maybe, he will.
