The New York Yankees and San Diego Padres once played in a World Series.
This week’s series is nowhere near that high-stakes, but it’s still incredibly intriguing. Unfortunately, it won’t start on time due to a rain delay in the Bronx.
The Yankees and Padres were slated for a 7:05 p.m. ET first pitch on Monday in the series opener. But at about 6:25 p.m. ET, the Yankees announced the game would begin in a delay, with no new start time given.
A tarp covered the field at Yankee Stadium in the hour leading up to the originally scheduled first pitch.
The Padres come to the Bronx at 22-11 on the season, a half-game back of the Dodgers in the NL West.
The Yankees lead the AL East by two games with a 19-15 mark.

San Diego was slated to send the dominant Nick Pivetta to the mound on Monday. He’s 5-1 with a 1.78 ERA.
New York is countering with Carlos Rodon, who is 4-3 with a 3.43 ERA.
The teams are also scheduled to play Tuesday and Wednesday night, both 7:05 p.m. first pitches, as well.
The Padres are slated to start former Yankees reliever Michael King (4-1, 2.09 ERA) on Tuesday after he’s been a revelation in his move to the rotation in San Diego.
Everything is on hold until the rain stops, though.
