The New York Yankees were seemingly among the finalists to make a surprising blockbuster trade for Houston Astros star Kyle Tucker, but they failed to land the plane.
After missing out on Juan Soto, who signed a historic $765 million deal with the New York Mets, the Yankees turned their attention to potentially acquiring Tucker in what would have been a massive deal.
Unfortunately for the Bombers, the Yankees were outbid by the Chicago Cubs in the sweepstakes for the star 27-year-old, first reported by Chandler Rome of The Athletic.
The Astros demonstrated interest in Rookie of the Year Luis Gil , but the Yankees reportedly were uncomfortable with him in any package.
The Cubs reportedly are sending a package that includes third baseman Isaac Parades and reliever Hayden Wesneski along with third baseman Cam Smith, who is Chicago’s No. 6 prospect, according to Baseball America.
The Yankees could still have a chance to grab Tucker, but they may have to wait until the MLB trade deadline in July or until free agency following the 2025 season as he will be an unrestricted free agent.
Without Tucker in the mix, the Yankees could very well turn their sights to Alex Bregman, another Astros star who is available in free agency. Adding Bregman would give the Yankees a strong bat to hit at the top of the lineup while also improving the defense drastically.
The Yankees also reportedly still have interest in former Baltimore Orioles star Anthony Santander after missing out on Soto, and they are reportedly in talks for a potential Cody Bellinger trade.
