Yankees not expected to pursue Blue Jays All-Star in free agency

Bo Bichette will be one of the best players available this offseason, and with the New York Yankees in clear need of a shortstop, many have speculated that he could one day wind up in the Bronx.

Not only has Anthony Volpe struggled immensely throughout his short Yankees career, but he’ll also miss the start of the 2026 season thanks to shoulder surgery done after the Yankees were eliminated in the ALDS.

However, Chris Kirschner of The Athletic doesn’t think Bichette will be considered a primary target for the Yankees this offseason, citing their more pressing needs that must be addressed first.

“The Yankees’ biggest needs include a center fielder, remaking the back end of their bullpen, replenishing the bench and possibly adding a starting pitcher,” Kirschner said. “With Volpe’s shoulder surgery delaying his 2026 season, it’s possible they add a shortstop. But don’t expect a player at the top of the market like Bo Bichette.”

While it appears unlikely, Bichette would be a major upgrade over Volpe. This season, Bichette hit .311 with 18 home runs, 94 RBIs, and an OPS of .840. Bichette also has long-established success in the Majors, being named to two All-Star teams, and leading the American League in hits twice.

The Yankees will evaluate all of their options this offseason. The team is in need of clear upgrades in key positions, so expect them to at least show interest in a player of Bichette’s caliber, even if nothing comes to fruition.
