Even with a busy offseason already under their belt, the New York Yankees have been connected to just about every big name available on the market thus far.
One of the biggest names the Yankees have been linked to throughout the process has been former Houston Astors star Alex Bregman.
Despite the baggage that would come given the history he has with the Astros’ cheating scandal, the fit between the Yankees and Bregman seems like a solid one on the field.
The Yankees could use a Gold-Glove talent at third base with his skills at the top of the lineup, and Bregman needs a new home after the Astros made some other moves this winter.
However, MLB.com insider Mark Feinsand threw some cold water on the notion that the Yankees will be in the market to pay up for the two-time All-Star.
“When you look at the teams that are still in the market at third base, the Yankees keep getting brought up,” Feinsand said. “I don’t see them being interested enough after spending the money they already spent on Max Fried, bringing in the Cody Bellinger contract, Devin Williams — I don’t see them spending the big money on Bregman.”
Feinsand went on to say the two landing spots he believes in most will be the Boston Red Sox and Detroit Tigers.
Earlier this offseason, Bob Nightengale of USA Today reported that Bregman is seeking a deal worth up to $200 million.
It would be a tough blow for the Yankees to watch Bregman go from the Crawford Boxes in Houston to the Green Monster in Boston. It would certainly cement his status as a Yankees villain, however.
The Yankees have a decision to make when it comes to the infield. They can keep Jazz Chisholm at third base and hope he continues to develop defensively after showing some promise during the second half of the season. That means they would likely go after free-agent Ha-Seong Kim or a trade for Brandon Lowe.
They also could move Chisholm back to second base and focus on upgrading the hot corner, but the options in free agency aren’t that abundant.
The hot stove is expected to heat up a bit more with the holidays behind us so this will certainly be something to monitor with spring training less than two months away.
