The New York Yankees are rolling toward the end of May, and they seem to be getting healthier.
Though they will be without Oswaldo Cabrera for the remainder of the season due to a fractured left ankle, star Jazz Chisholm (oblique) could be returning sooner rather than later.
Yankees manager Aaron Boone told reporters before Monday night’s game against the Los Angeles Angels that Chisholm is going through a full workout Tuesday and could begin a rehab assignment later in the week.
The Yankees have gotten DJ LeMahieu back in the lineup, but he’s still left a lot to be desired at the plate with an 82 OPS+ in 33 plate appearances.
After avoiding arbitration this offseason with a one-year, $5.85 million deal, it has been a volatile season for the 27-year-old. Chisholm is hitting just .181, but he’s also hit seven home runs while posting a respectable .714 OPS.
Having Chisholm in the lineup is better than not having him considering the pop he brings as well as the stellar defense he’s displayed since moving back to second base.
It isn’t clear how many games Chisholm will need before he returns, but this is a step in the right direction.
