Yankees listed as possible destination for $15 million Cardinals hurler

The New York Yankees have been stung by injuries early on this spring. Giancarlo Stanton is already out for an extended period of time, but so are Luis Gil and Gerrit Cole. Right-hander Clarke Schmidt also recently went down.

Between now and the trade deadline, the Bronx Bombers are going to need some reinforcements.

Fortunately, there are options available for New York. They could easily make a trade to bolster their rotation.

CBS Sports’ Mike Axisa proposed the idea of New York trading for St. Louis Cardinals right-hander Erick Fedde.

“Fedde could be the best non-Alcantara starter traded this summer. He’s a very affordable rental ($7.5 million salary) who showed last year that his success in Korea was no fluke,” Axisa wrote

Fedde went 9-9 with a 3.30 ERA last year with the Cardinals and Chicago White Sox. St. Louis picked him up at the trade deadline.

But with St. Louis rebuilding, it would make sense for him to be traded. He’s entering the final year of his contract, and as a rental starter, he could command a solid return.

But he can provide innings coverage and keep teams in games, having pitched 177 1/3 innings last year, and the Yankees need somebody who can cover innings and fill the rotation until Gil makes his return.

At the very least, the Yankees should consider adding him at the deadline to boost their rotation. They’ve been hit hard by injuries, and if they want to remain a threat to win a World Series title, they’ll need some help on the pitching side.
