Yankees linked to Reds’ ace Hunter Greene in blockbuster trade idea

Cincinnati Reds’ ace Hunter Greene is coming off a fantastic season. He started 19 games during the regular season, putting together a 7-4 record with a 2.76 ERA across 107.2 innings of work. He was able to throw his second complete game shutout of his career late into the season against the Chicago Cubs.

The only downside of his season was the time that he missed due to injuries. He was out for a few weeks in May due to a strained right groin. Greene would later reinjure the same groin in June, which caused him to miss two months.

While he is under team control until after the 2029 season, he could be viewed as a great trade candidate if the Reds decided to part ways. There are plenty of teams that will be looking to upgrade their starting rotation over the winter.

The Athletic’s Jim Bowden recently came out with a list of potential trade candidates for the offseason. Here, he listed Hunter Greene as a prime candidate to be moved, even if he does not understand Cincinnati’s thought process.

“There have been reports out of Cincinnati that the Reds are planning to shop Greene this winter. I have not been able to confirm these reports, nor do I understand why they would want to consider it since they have him under team control through the 2029 season (Greene signed a six-year, $53 million extension in 2023 with a team option for 2029 worth $21 million).

Greene has operated as the Reds’ ace, and with that amount of team control, it would make more sense to keep him put. However, with the rampant rumors from Cincinnati, Bowden believes the New York Yankees have what it takes to get a deal done.

The Bronx Bombers have the prospects to get a deal done, and Greene would instantly boost their rotation. He could look great alongside Gerrit Cole, Luis Gil, and Max Fried.
