Yankees linked to $5.4 million All-Star, Gold Glove, could replace Cody Bellinger after opt out

Yankees linked to .4 million All-Star, Gold Glove, could replace Cody Bellinger after opt out

The New York Yankees are one of the latest victims of the first day of the offseason, with their superstar, Cody Bellinger, opting out of his contract to test free agency. The Yanks could bring him back, but the amount of money he commands might make them hesitant.

The Yanks could go for a more cost-effective replacement, and MLB Trade Rumors’ Steve Adams has a great match for them, someone who they were linked to last offseason: St. Louis Cardinals’ Brendan Donovan.

“That high-contact approach, affordable salary and defensive versatility make Donovan a natural fit on virtually any contender…The Yankees were connected to Donovan last winter.”

This past season, Donovan slashed .287/.353/.422/.775 with 32 doubles, 10 home runs, and 52 RBI in 118 games played. He earned his first All-Star nod as well, to go along with the Gold Glove he earned in 2022.

Donovan is a good replacement for Bellinger, as one, he’s a lefty, and two, he plays left field. He also plays first, second, and third base, as well as shortstop, and right field. He would be an amazing utility man to have to replace anyone who goes down with an injury.

Even if the Yankees manage to keep Bellinger, getting Donovan should be on their to-do list. He’s too great a player to ignore for his price tag, and hopefully, New York realizes that.
