Yankees legend calls out current team for flawed approach on the field

The New York Yankees haven’t played up to the level of their talent this season.

One former Yankees star is pretty sure he knows why.

Jorge Posada was at Yankee Stadium on Saturday as part of Old Timers’ Day, and he was asked by SNY about the current club.

This is what he had to say:

“It’s more of an attitude than anything. They just gotta get a little angry, hopefully a fight or something that happens, not a fight but something that happens to get them going… They need to have that chip on their shoulder. You’ve gotta play like that. You can’t be friends with everybody.”

Posada, of course, knows winning.

He was the catcher on four world championship teams, in 1998, 1999, 2000 and 2009 — also known as the last four times the Yankees won the World Series.

He was part of the “Core Four” with Derek Jeter, Mariano Rivera and Andy Pettitte.

This year’s Yankees are coming off an extra-innings loss Friday night to the Astros, and they sit third place in the AL East.

The Red Sox, who scuffled for much of the season, are hot and have passed the Yanks for second.

The Toronto Blue Jays have been on fire since June began and are in first place, 6.5 games up on the Yankees.

New York is still in position to seize a wild card spot, but leapfrogging the two teams ahead of them in the division race could prove difficult.

Posada has a point, though. Maybe a mindset change is needed to maximize the rest of the season.
