The New York Yankees were busy this offseason after losing Juan Soto. They signed Paul Goldschmidt and Max Fried and also traded for Devin Williams and Cody Bellinger.
Even with Soto gone, the Yankees appear to have the best roster in the American League. They are likely done adding this offseason, but they may be primed for a big offseason next winter.
Bob Klapisch of New Jersey Advance Media revealed that the Yankees will have three obvious free agent targets next winter, those being Vladimir Guerrero Jr., Munetaka Murakami and Williams.
Guerrero and the Toronto Blue Jays were unable to reach an agreement on a contract extension, and it appears very likely that Guerrero will enter free agency at the end of the 2025 season.
Williams was acquired by the Yankees with one year left on his contract, and New York will need to have a legitimate closer in 2026. Murakami has been a power threat in Japan, and with Goldschmidt set to enter free agency again after 2025, the Yankees may need to replace him.
One major sticking point for the Yankees recently has been the contract of Marcus Stroman. That has prevented them from adding any further pieces in free agency.
Once that contract is off the books, then New York should be able to have some flexibility in adding money next offseason. This has been the main reason why they never had any interest in Nolan Arenado.
But if 2025 ends up not being the year for the Yankees, they could have more money to spend to ensure 2026 is the year. It will certainly be interesting to see what the Yankees have planned in the future.
