The New York Yankees dropped two of three against the Detroit Tigers this week, and now head to Fenway Park for perhaps the team’s biggest series of the year in a tight Wild Card race.
In other news, during the Detroit series, Yankees manager Aaron Boone announced that Anthony Volpe has been playing through a tear in his shoulder and is now likely to be sidelined for the remainder of the regular season and into the playoffs.
Yankees insider unsure of what Volpe’s future is with the organization
After a horrible offensive and defensive campaign with the Yankees, it seems New York’s front office and coaching staff have found a more stable option at shortstop in the form of Jose Caballero, who the Yankees acquired from the Tampa Bay Rays at the trade deadline.
Bob Klapisch of NJ.com also believes that Volpe’s time in New York may be coming to an end shortly.
“News of his partially torn labrum will likely keep him on the bench during the playoffs and casts doubt about his future in the Bronx. Caballero is under club control through 2029. Hot-shot prospect George Lombard Jr. will also get a close look. Volpe could be in no-man’s land, assuming he’s even in pinstripes.”
Since the Yankees seem to have some replacement options up the middle, plus the news of Volpe’s shoulder injury, that might be the perfect recipe for the front office to move on from him following the season.
Volpe does have 19 home runs this season, but is hitting just .206 in 141 games with an OPS+ of 82. He leads the AL in defensive errors and strikes out far too much.
The Anthony Volpe experiment may be coming to an end shortly, and Yankees fans can rejoice because of it. He was supposed to be the heir apparent of Derek Jeter, but he just isn’t nearly as good a defender, and lacks the clutch aspect of hitting in his game.
