The New York Yankees have some tough decisions to make in the coming days. Opening Day is three days away, and their roster has still yet to be finalized.
They will begin the season without Giancarlo Stanton and are also going to be without Luis Gil until July. To make matters worse, Clarke Schmidt is also delayed and Gerrit Cole is out for the season.
One area that they’d like to improve is third base. Right now, with D.J. LeMahieu on the shelf, they have two options, Oswald Peraza and Oswaldo Cabrera.
However, Peraza faces an uncertain future, as Pete Caldera of USA Today points out.
“Third base, outfield depth and pitching depth remain areas to potentially bolster, and Cashman recently stated his desire to provide Boone with another right-handed hitter,” Caldera wrote.
“Out of minor league options, infielder Oswald Peraza remains a trade candidate, and his roster status was still uncertain as of Sunday night.”
There are limited options in free agency with Opening Day just days away. New York will likely have to dive into the trade market in order to add a right-handed bat.
It seems as though Peraza is falling out of favor and won’t have a fit on the team for much longer.
A right-handed hitting third base option would be ideal. This would give them somebody who can play every day while they wait for LeMahieu to come back from his injury.
It’s unclear who the Yankees would target to fill that need. While unlikely, they could potentially find themselves looking into Nolan Arenado, who the St. Louis Cardinals tried to trade this past offseason.
It will be interesting to see what the Yankees decide to do. If they can’t find somebody, they could stick with Peraza at third base, but his place in the organization is unclear.
