Yankees find unexpected shortstop option in veteran infielder

Over the last few weeks, manager Aaron Boone and the New York Yankees have made headlines over their future at the shortstop position, especially with the playoffs approaching.

Will the Yankees continue to start Anthony Volpe, who has struggled defensively and has trouble hitting for average? Or will they start Jose Caballero, a super-utility player who provides better defense, less power and a strong stolen-base upside?

Amid debate over these two options, another possibility has emerged.

Acquired near the trade deadline from the Washington Nationals, veteran utility player Amed Rosario has been a solid pickup for the Yankees. Currently used as a platoon player, Rosario brings big-league experience and versatility.

Since being acquired by New York, Rosario has played in 13 games and gone 10-for-25, including a two-RBI double last night.

Boone praised Rosario’s preparation and presence. “He prepares really well. He’s a pro. I love the energy he brings to the field. He has a veteran presence. He’s been a starter in this league and morphed into a lefty killer who bounces around [on defense],” Boone said.

Rosario can play second base, third base, and the outfield, but has the most experience at shortstop. In more than 1,000 big-league games, he has logged 767 appearances at short compared with 80 at second, 45 at third and 57 in the outfield.

Although Rosario taking over everyday shortstop duties may be unlikely, his ability to platoon with Caballero and Volpe at shortstop, as well as Ryan McMahon at third, will guarantee him playing time in the postseason.
