Yankees expected to part with veteran relief pitcher after 2025

In February of 2016, the New York Yankees signed Nicaraguan pitcher Jonathan Loaisiga, and he would receive his call up to the majors two years later in June of 2018.

The 2021 season would prove to be his most efficient thus far, posting a 2.17 ERA in 57 appearances with a 9-4 record and 69 strikeouts in his only season that his WAR has gotten above 1.0, where it was a staggering 3.3.

However, since then, injuries and lack of production have lowered Loaisiga’s value, and after only appearing in 20 games with the team in 2023 and 2024 combined, the reliever again suffered a season-ending injury just last August against the Miami Marlins, and this time, it could be the last straw.

Yankees Expected to Let Loaisiga Go After 2025

According to Thomas Carannante of Yanks Go Yard on FanSided, Loaisiga is featured on a list of five Yankees players that could be entering their final days in pinstripes, with the team being told to learn their lesson with the reliever this time around.

“The veteran has a $5 million team option for 2026,” Carannante writes. “The Yankees better learn their lesson this time. They cannot keep paying Loaisiga given how unreliable he’s been on almost every front.”

And that last statement couldn’t ring truer for the team, as Loaisiga is currently 0-1 with a 4.25 ERA in just 30 games and 29.2 innings played in the 2025 season, striking out 25 hitters and walking 10.

Ever since his impressive 2021 season, Loaisiga’s total WAR over the next four seasons? A disappointing 0.4, so don’t expect Loaisiga to enter a high-stakes situation during the Yankees’ postseason play.
