The New York Yankees called up an established veteran pitcher on Sunday, then placed him on waivers on Monday.
In between, he didn’t throw a single pitch.
Carlos Carrasco is the victim of this odd roster movement. The 112-game winner, a veteran of 16 MLB seasons across three teams, is now on waivers and awaiting a potential claim.
If no one claims Carrasco, he can elect free agency or choose to return to Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes Barre.
The Yankees called Carrasco up Sunday as pitching depth a day after their bullpen was taxed in an 18-2 loss.
New York didn’t need him, though, and with Fernando Cruz slated to come off the Injured List, the 38-year old was deemed surplus to proceedings.

Carrasco has already made eight appearances at the MLB level this season, including six starts. He has a 2-2 record and a 5.91 ERA.
The Yankees already placed Carrasco on waivers once this season, and he wasn’t claimed. That time, he chose to accept an assignment to Triple-A, which may be what happens again.
A different team could choose to add the long-time Cleveland and Mets pitcher as some depth, though.
Carrasco is a great clubhouse presence who can still eat innings, even if he isn’t as effective as he once was.
The Yankees probably wouldn’t mind keeping him around as a mentor in the minor leagues, either.
Soon, we’ll know what Carrasco’s next step is, but for now, we know he flew to Dodger Stadium for nothing.
