The New York Yankees lost out on Christian Walker to the Houston Astros. The move could cause a ripple effect that makes an All-Star available for the Yankees to sign.
The signing of Walker likely means the end of Alex Bregman’s time with the Astros, according to MLB insider Ken Rosenthal. A Bleacher Report livestream named the Yankees as a potential landing spot for Bregman.
Spotrac projects Bregman to sign a four-year, $119 million deal in free agency. He hit 26 home runs in 2024 and won his first career Gold Glove. The Yankees still need a first baseman, but adding Bregman would fill a need in the hot corner. They could move Jazz Chisholm Jr. to second base or the outfield, allowing Bregman to be the everyday third baseman.
Bregman is a two-time All-Star, Gold Glover and Silver Slugger. He is the clear-cut best third baseman on the market. Bregman has spent his entire big-league career with the Astros, and some Yankees fans may not be to keen on signing him because of the history between the two franchises. However, the reality is that Bregman was a key player in the Astros’ success in recent years.
The Yankees have money to spend after losing Juan Soto. They have been aggressive this winter and added Cody Bellinger, Devin Williams and Max Fried. Adding Bregman would give them another superstar as they look to make it back to the World Series. Bregman will be a hot name on the market, but the Yankees could outbid other suitors.
