Yankees could move injured pitcher to bullpen upon return

The New York Yankees were active at the trade deadline, adding multiple impact relievers to their bullpen.

With a 60-50 record, New York holds the top American League Wild Card playoff spot. The Yankees made major additions across the board, bringing in third baseman Ryan McMahon, but their biggest additions were a trio of relievers, including former All-Star David Bednar from the Pittsburgh Pirates.

Despite bringing in multiple relievers, the Yankees failed to add a left-handed pitcher to pair with Tim Hill in the bullpen. Now the Yankees may move the injured Ryan Yarbrough to the bullpen, according to The New York Daily News’ Gary Phillips.

“I’ve mentioned that the Yankees wanted another left-handed RP to pair with the highly-used Tim Hill,” Phillips wrote. “They didn’t get one, but Ryan Yarbrough is an option once healthy. So is Brent Headrick, who has impressed this week.”

Yarbrough hasn’t pitched since June 18 after suffering a right oblique strain. The 33-year-old southpaw is nearing a return and has begun throwing off a bullpen mound recently. Though he will certainly need a rehab assignment before making his return, he was in the middle of a solid season before his injury.

Yarbrough has spent a good portion of his career as a reliever and could serve as a middle reliever in the bullpen for New York. The veteran southpaw has a 3.90 ERA across 55.1 innings pitched this season with a 1.17 WHIP. Switching his role could be a big help to the Yankees down the stretch.
