Yankees could lose veteran hurler without roster spot

The New York Yankees have a decision to make on one of their veteran pitchers as he continues making progress returning from injury.

The Yankees’ pitching staff has been one of the best in the entire league, ranking first in the league in WHIP with a 1.15 and first in batting average against with a .207. New York also ranks sixth in ERA with a 3.25.

As fourth-year starting pitcher JT Brubaker continues his rehab assignment and nears a return from injury, the Yankees will have to decide if they will retain him or designate him for assignment, according to NJ.com’s Max Goodman.

“Pitchers have a maximum allotment of 30 days for a rehab assignment, so the Yankees have only a few more weeks to go until Brubaker’s rehab clock expires,” Goodman wrote. “What the Yankees will do with Brubaker when he’s cleared remains to be seen, though. Brubaker doesn’t have any minor-league options, so the Yankees can’t stow him away in Triple-A without any repercussions.”

“Unlike Carrasco, there’s a good shot that Brubaker would be scooped up by another team, especially if he continues to pitch well as he ramps up. Other clubs are desperate for starting pitching whereas there’s no spot for Brubaker in pinstripes. Would the Yankees be willing to let him go? They clearly value his upside considering they traded for him with the Pirates last spring when he was still rehabbing back from Tommy John surgery.”

Brubaker hasn’t pitched in the big leagues since 2022 for the Pittsburgh Pirates. Though the Yankees traded for him, with how well their pitching staff is performing right now, there doesn’t seem to be a spot for the 31-year-old.
