Yankees could extend qualifying offer to Trent Grisham

The New York Yankees are faced with a big decision this offseason on outfielder Trent Grisham. After the best season of his Major League career, Grisham will enter the open market as one of baseball’s most intriguing free agents.

Initially a throw-in as part of the trade that sent Juan Soto from the San Diego Padres to the New York Yankees in December 2023, Grisham broke out in a big way after earning playing time in 2025. Grisham smashed a career-high 34 home runs with an OPS of .811. His mix of power upside with elite fielding skills in center field make him an enticing asset for many teams going forward.

Grisham could receive qualifying offer from the Yankees

Anthony Franco of MLB Trade Rumors expects Grisham to receive a qualifying offer from the Yankees, but isn’t sure if he’ll accept it or not.

“If they feel there’s even a 10% chance of Grisham accepting, maybe they’d rather not risk committing $22MM and an accompanying $24MM in luxury taxes within the first two weeks of the offseason,” Franco said. “Still, one imagines they’d happily take Grisham back on the off chance that he were willing to accept a one-year guarantee.”

Nonetheless, Grisham was an important piece to the Yankees last season, but it remains to be seen if they are willing to hand him a long-term contract in exchange. One of the more surprising breakouts of the 2025 season, Grisham could be in for a big paycheck this offseason.
