The New York Yankees watched Oswaldo Cabrera leave the field in an ambulance after tagging up on a shallow fly ball. His injury has increased the Yankees’ need for an infielder.
DJ LeMahieu is expected to return this week. However, with Jazz Chisholm Jr. out, LeMahieu figures to see more time at second base. Manager Aaron Boone has also noted that LeMahieu may not be playing every day. Oswald Peraza will likely see more time at third base now. However, both he and LeMahieu are not inspiring options for a team with World Series aspirations.
Cabrera’s injury could force the Yankees’ hand. Rafael Devers has recently expressed his displeasure with the chief baseball officer of the Boston Red Sox, Craig Breslow. He went on a rant to the media about the team’s treatment of him after they asked him to move to first base after already forcing him to be the designated hitter. With tensions high, could the team be open to trading Devers, and, more importantly, would they consider trading him to the Yankees?
The Red Sox trading Devers to the Yankees would likely be their last choice. However, there are not going to be many teams with the money to pay a player like Devers. The three-time All-Star signed a 10-year, $313 million deal in 2023. However, since then, the team has added Alex Bregman and removed Devers from the hot corner.
The Red Sox could take advantage of the Yankees’ situation and get a haul of young players in exchange for Devers and his contract. Devers would give the Yankees an answer to their third base problem. However, it would take multiple top 10 prospects and some big league talent to convince the Red Sox to even entertain trading him to the Yankees.

Devers is leading the American League in walks and is slashing .285/.407/.494. The Yankees’ designated hitter spot is already occupied by Ben Rice. Soon, Giancarlo Stanton will take that role. Devers will get the opportunity to play third base once again if the Yankees go after him. Going after Devers would be a move that would indicate the Yankees’ commitment to winning while Aaron Judge is playing his best baseball.
