Yankees could cut ties with Paul Goldschmidt via trade to rival Red Sox

The Boston Red Sox have a need at first base with Triston Casas injured. The New York Yankees could do the unthinkable and send Paul Goldschmidt to Boston.

The Yankees signed Goldschmidt last winter after a down year. He has bounced back with the Yankees, but will hit free agency after the year. The Yankees may not want to re-sign him because of his age and his blocking of Ben Rice. Rice has been playing as the designated hitter with Giancarlo Stanton out, but when he returns, Rice will have nowhere to play every day.

Goldschmidt has been great for the Yankees, so trading him would be a shocking move. However, it would be a move that allows Ben Rice to stay in the lineup while maximizing Goldschmidt’s value. AthlonSports Jon Conahan suggested the Yankees trade Goldschmidt to the needy Red Sox.

“The Yankees moving Goldschmidt to the Red Sox might seem unlikely, but New York might be interested in adding a few of their players, with Boston’s farm system being as talented as it is,” wrote Conahan. “Currently hitting .344 with four home runs and an OPS+ of 149, the Red Sox should consider him if the Yankees are willing to move on.”

Goldschmidt had some of the worst numbers of his career in 2024. He still managed to hit 22 home runs, however. This year he is slashing .346/.395/.506 with five home runs. However, if the Yankees do not think the 37-year-old’s revival is sustainable, they need to consider trading him.

The biggest reason for trading Goldschmidt is not because he is heading into free agency soon or because of his age. It’s the fact that keeping him could, in fact, hurt Rice’s development. Right now, Rice is playing on a nightly basis. When Stanton returns to the DH spot, that will change. The Yankees could take advantage of the Red Sox’s need and move Goldschmidt, adding prospects and clearing a path for Rice along the way.
