Yankees considering former Gold Glove winner to bolster infield depth

Adding depth to the infield roster is one of the main objectives for the New York Yankees ahead of spring training.

The Yankees haven’t been shy about that endeavor as they’ve seemingly turned over every rock, from the big names in Alex Bregman and Nolan Arenado to the cheaper options like Paul DeJong.

The latest name added to the list that the Yankees are considering is former Gold Glove winner Brendan Rodgers, who was non-tendered by the Colorado Rockies this offseason.

Rodgers is on the list of potential additions the Yankees are considering, according to Jon Heyman of The New York Post.

With Rodgers, the Yankees would have a few avenues to consider. He’s played mostly second base throughout his career so he could be a potential platoon option with lefty Jazz Chisholm, should the latter be moved back to second base.

There’s not a whole lot to be excited about Rodgers’ profile. He’s a league-average or slightly below-league-average player in most metrics. He did post a hard-hit rate in the 70th percentile, per Baseball Savant, but his strikeout rate (33rd percentile) and walk rate (17th percentile) leave much to be desired.

Despite winning a Gold Glove in 2022, Rodgers hasn’t played at that level since — at least in terms of defensive metrics. According to Outs Above Average (OAA), Rodgers’ -3 mark ranked in the 23rd percentile. That would still be an upgrade defensively over what New York got from Gleyber Torres.

Regardless, the Yankees need to add more depth to the infield, and Rodgers could be a cheap option to compete at second base so this will be something to keep an eye on.
