On Sunday, a terrible incident took place at Progressive Field while the Cleveland Guardians and Boston Red Sox faced off.
Red Sox outfielder Jarren Duran has been open about his mental health struggles and even revealed that he attempted suicide in 2022 in the latest Red Sox documentary, and on Sunday, a Guardians fan made a derogatory comment towards Duran regarding that attempt.
Across Major League Baseball, players have voiced their support for Duran after Sunday’s incident, even those with the rival New York Yankees.
Cody Bellinger commented on the incident and called for decisive action from the Guardians.
“Ban him,” he said. “It’s definitely not cool. We’re good at what we do and we’re at the highest level, but we’re all human beings with emotions and feelings. It was hard to hear what that fan said to Duran.”

Bellinger wasn’t the only member of the Yankees to comment on the situation. Aaron Judge, Carlos Rodon and Pablo Reyes, a former Red Sox teammate of Duran, all voiced their support.
The Guardians are currently in the process of deciding whether or not the fan will be allowed back at Progressive Field, but Bellinger made his stance clear, that he hopes the Guardians do not allow the fan to return.
The Red Sox are obviously the Yankees’ biggest rivals, but Bellinger was willing to set that aside when discussing what Duran had to go through.
As he noted, players are humans as well that have to go through their own struggles on a daily basis, and what happened to Duran on Sunday was a perfect example of a fan taking things too far.
Fortunately, the league has been very supportive of Duran after the incident took place, and several players have vouched for him.
