The New York Yankees could be looking for starting pitchers near the trade deadline to help them in their quest to get back to the World Series. The Atlanta Braves could have a piece they want.
The Braves are 28-38 this season and could be selleres when the trade deadline rolls around. If that’s the case, Chris Sale could be made available. The Yankees have been without Gerrit Cole and Luis Gil all seaosn. While Gil is expected to return, the Yankees could still use a reliable arm in the rotation.
Carlos Rodón, Ryan Yarbrough and Max Fried have basically carried the Yankees rotation to this point. However, replacing Will Warren or Clarke Schmidt with a player like Sale would be a great move for the Yankees. Heavy’s Cole Shelton proposed this trade that would bring Sale from the Braves to the Yankees:

- Red Sox: Spencer Jones and Brock Selvidge
“The proposed deal would be a blockbuster as New York would acquire Sale for two top-10 prospects, including their second-ranked prospect. The Yankees would acquire Sale, who’s earning $22 million this season and has a club option for $18 million,” wrote Shelton. “Sale would be the Yankees’ No. 3 starter behind Max Fried and Carlos Rodon, which would be a great three-man rotation for a playoff series. Sale is 4-4 with a 2.79 ERA in 14 starts this season. He won the NL Cy Young in 2024 and is an eight-time All-Star, as well as winning the World Series with the Boston Red Sox in 2018.”

Sale is an eight-time All-Star and has a case to be a Hall of Famer one day. His postseason experience alone should make him attractive to contenders. The Braves may not be interested in picking up his $18 million option in his age-37 season. If the Braves are out of contention, players who are not inked to long-term deals like Sale and Marcell Ozuna could be on the move.
This would be a big deal for the Yankees as Jones and Selvidge could play a big role in their future. However, Sale could help them win the World Series this season.
