The New York Yankees’ starting pitching has been a hot topic all season, but it’s up for debate whether or not they need to add reinforcements.
Ace Max Fried and number-two starter Carlos Rodón aren’t going anywhere, and Clarke Schmidt is quickly solidifying himself in the number-three role after another gem on Monday night. There’s also the potential return of 2024 Rookie of the Year of Luis Gil to keep in mind.
But rookie Will Warren has had his ups and downs, and journeyman Ryan Yarbrough might not be the ideal number-five for the rest of the year. Certainly, no one would fault the Yankees for going after another rotation option at the deadline.
One baseball writer believes the Yankees could be a strong fit for a long-time Miami Marlins starter who has always possessed great stuff.
On Monday, Matthew Schmidt of Marlins on SI named the Yankees as one of the “most likely” destinations for 27-year-old righty Edward Cabrera, who would come with three-and-a-half years of team control if he was dealt this year.
“Not that Cabrera has been a beacon of health himself, but he has more experience than Gil and would provide some much-needed insurance for the Yanks,” Schmidt wrote.

“The question is whether or not general manager Brian Cashman, who is notoriously stingy with prospects, would be willing to surrender what the Marlins would want in a deal.”
Cabrera owns a 4.10 ERA in 11 starts this season, striking out 58 batters in 52 2/3 innings. He’s got a funky arsenal–though his fastball averages over 96 miles per hour, it’s his fifth-most-used pitch, while his 93-mile-per-hour changeup almost acts like his primary fastball.
While there’s certainly no guarantee the Yankees go after Cabrera, it’s likely he’ll be an option, as the Marlins are prepared to trade just about anyone with major league experience.
