Despite being one of the best teams in Major League Baseball, the New York Yankees have a couple of holes to fill in their roster as they continue to battle injuries.
The Yankees’ offense ranks in the top five in most statistical categories, including runs, batting average, and home runs. However, New York has had many key players deal with injury this season, including Jazz Chisholm Jr. and Oswaldo Cabrera, as well as multiple injuries to pitchers.
One of the recent injuries for the Yankees is third baseman Cabrera, who fractured his left ankle and isn’t expected to return until 2026. In his absence, New York has had to rely on Oswald Peraza and Jorbit Vivas to man the hot corner, but has not gotten much production out of them.
DJ LeMahieu would be a good option to play third, but he has been playing second base with Chisholm out with an injury. As injuries pile up, the Yankees are aggressively looking for a third baseman to trade for, as well as another starting pitcher, according to USA Today’s Bob Nightengale.
“The Yankees are aggressively searching for a right-handed bat, preferably a third baseman, while also looking for another starter,” Nightengale wrote.

Likely the biggest name on the trade block at third base is St. Louis Cardinals’ Nolan Arenado. Arenado is an eight-time All-Star, slashing .239/.312/.698 with five home runs and 25 RBIs in 48 games this season. If New York doesn’t want to give up a lot in a deal, the team could look for other veteran options like Yandy Díaz or Mauricio Dubon.
