Yankees add ex-Braves reliever on minor league deal

The New York Yankees didn’t waste any time after losing Juan Soto to the New York Mets.

Instead of retreating, the Bronx Bombers added Max Fried, Devin Williams, Cody Bellinger and Paul Goldschmidt. The team has certainly been busy this offseason and looks to have a good chance to return to the World Series in 2025.

Late on Monday, the Yankees added another piece. According to Chris Cotillo of MassLive, New York has signed left-hander Tyler Matzek.

“It’ll be a minor league deal for Matzek, who impressed scouts in a recent showcase,” Cotillo tweeted. “Agreement in place.”

Matzek returned to the Atlanta Braves after sitting out the 2023 season with the San Francisco Giants due to an injury. Last year, he struggled, posting a 9.90 ERA in 11 appearances.

However, he played a key role in the Braves winning their first World Series title since 1995 back in 2021. He isn’t far removed from a solid 2022 season either.

That year, he went 4-2 with a 3.50 ERA in 42 appearances with the then-defending World Series champions.

If he has a good spring, he could have a solid chance to earn an opportunity with the big-league club. If he can make it back to the majors, he could be a solid bounce-back candidate for the Bronx Bombers as they try to make a return trip to the World Series this coming fall.

New York went 94-68 last year and had the best record in the American League. They knocked out the Kansas City Royals in the ALDS and Cleveland Guardians in the ALCS.

We’ll see if Matzek can earn an opportunity and help the Yankees bounce back from their World Series defeat at the hands of the Los Angeles Dodgers.
