Yankees’ Aaron Boone reveals plans for New York’s rotation

The New York Yankees rotation has been derailed by injuries, but they’ve performed at a somewhat decent level, given everything they’ve dealt with.

The Yankees, however, designated fifth starter Carlos Carrasco for assignment before Tuesday’s 12-3 win against the San Diego Padres in the Bronx.

Carrasco, who has been around the league after making his debut during the 2009 season, isn’t the same arm he once was. He posted a 5.91 ERA for New York, going 2-2 in his eight appearances.

For the Yankees, despite the below-average production, skipper Aaron Boone revealed that it wasn’t an easy call. He added that the Yankees have a lot of respect for Carrasco, but it felt like this was the right time to move on from him.

“Tough call,” Boone said, per the NY Post. “Obviously, how we feel about Cookie, just felt like we needed to do this. Toyed with this for a couple days now, just felt like this was the right time.”

Regarding the fifth spot in the rotation, the Yankees now have some decisions to make. With Ryan Yarbrough, Allan Winans, and others, New York has a need for a fifth starter.

According to Boone, the Yankees are in a “we’ll see” situation and will play it from there.

“We’ll see,” Boone said of the status of the back end of his rotation. “Kind of depends on how the next couple of games unfold.”

While his comments are about the immediate term, this could also be a sign of what the Yankees have to do at the trade deadline.

The team needs a fifth starter, and one could even argue they need an ace-caliber arm. If they have an opportunity to land one, that must be done.
