The New York Yankees defeated the Seattle Mariners, 11-5, on the road on Monday night. Clarke Schmidt pitched well for New York, going six innings while giving up three runs on three hits.
However, the story of the game was a horrific injury to Oswaldo Cabrera. In the top of the ninth, Cabrera scored via an Aaron Judge sacrifice fly, but his ankle went the wrong way and he writhed in pain at home plate.
An ambulance then came out and took Cabrera with his leg wrapped up in an emotional scene in Seattle.
After the game, Yankees manager Aaron Boone gave an update on Cabrera, per Brendan Kuty of The Athletic.
“He’s at the hospital,” Aaron Boone said. “Everyone understands it was a pretty serious situation. Just praying for our guy, Cabby tonight.”
Kuty gave some more details on Cabrera’s injury as well.
“Oswaldo Cabrera was taken to nearby Harborview Medical Center. Yankees trainer Tim Lentych went with him. His left ankle was braced before he was put onto the stretcher and taken away via ambulance.”
It was definitely a tough scene for the Yankees as numerous teammates spoke highly of Cabrera, including Trent Grisham, per Kuty.
“He’s one of the best human beings in the clubhouse,” Grisham said. “It stings. It hurts a lot to see somebody that’s one of the best of us go down like that.”
For now, the Yankees are in wait-and-see mode, but Boone said he is in the hospital after leaving via an ambulance on Monday night.
More details should come soon.
