Yankees $90 million 4-time Gold Glover could replace Gleyber Torres

The New York Yankees have had a busy offseason which will have their team looking very different in 2025. Gleyber Torres signed with the Detroit Tigers and the Yankees may have his replacement in-house.

Torres signed a one-year, $15 million deal with the Tigers according to USA Today’s Bob Nightengale. The Yankees will now have to find a way to replace him by either moving Jazz Chisholm Jr. over and adding a third baseman or perhaps simply plugging in a player they already have. The New York Post’s Mark W. Sanchez noted that they may not have to make any moves at all.

“Many top targets are off the free-agent board, and it’s possible the Yankees will have to fill the hole left by Torres through trade (or simply not fill it),” wrote Sanchez. “For the past several seasons, the Yankees had not talked about a long-term deal with Torres in large part because there were alternatives. Oswald Peraza had a strong prospect shine. Jorbit Vivas was brought in. Caleb Durbin looked promising. Now, Peraza has proven little as a major leaguer, Vivas is merely a prospect and Durbin is a Brewer.”

One option the Yankees have if they don’t make any trades is to play DJ LeMahieu as the everyday second baseman. He played in 67 games last season. After fouling a ball off his foot in Spring training he made his debut at the end of May. A hip injury forced him to end the season early, playing his last game on September 3.

He had a down year in 2023 as well. However, he is under contract for the next two seasons after he signed a six-year, $90 million deal with the Yankees in 2021. He has displayed great defensive versatility in his career. He has started 1,078 games at second base, 262 games at third base and 165 games at first base.

He is a four-time Gold Glover with three of them coming at second base. When healthy, he is a valuable piece in the lineup. He is a 3-time All-Star, two-time batting champion and a two-time Silver Slugger.
